Undergraduate Scholarships

Awards and scholarships are awarded on a variety of criteria as outlined by the various donors. This may include:

  • Academic merit
  • Financial need, as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid
  • Demonstrated interest in a specific career field

Aric Chandler Endowed Scholarship

In memory of Aric Joseph Chandler, his parents, family, and friends endowed a scholarship fund to support UW Seattle undergraduate psychology majors who transferred to UW from a Washington community college. This generous gift was made to advance Aric's passion, vision, and dedication to helping others, especially young people.

Award Amount: Typically, up to three awards in the amount of roughly $3,500 each will be made each year. This can vary from year to year based on the endowment fund balance. The award can be used to cover any education related expense.

Eligibility: All current UW Seattle undergraduate psychology majors who transferred to UW Seattle from a Washington community college, with preference given to applicants who demonstrate an interest in issues related to children and/or adolescents.(Note that Running Start students who entered UW Seattle as freshmen are not eligible.)

Application Cycle: A call for applications will be sent to all current UW Seattle psychology majors in early to mid-fall quarter each year with award decisions made by the end of that same quarter.

Guthrie Prize for Writing in Psychology

Named for the late Psychology professor Edwin R. Guthrie, the prize was established to encourage excellent writing about psychology that is both broad in scope and accessible to the non-specialist. One award is typically made in two categories: one for an empirical paper and one for a general research paper (e.g., literature review, research proposal).

Award amount: Each award is typically between $250 and $500.

Eligibility: Current undergraduate psychology majors at UW Seattle.

Application Cycle: A call for nominations goes out to all Psychology Department faculty late in winter quarter each year, with award decisions made late in spring quarter.

How to apply: Nominations must be submitted by faculty but students are encouraged to reach out to their faculty advisors and mentors if they have written a paper that they feel could be nominated.

 

Ruth H. Hagenstein Endowed Scholarship

Thanks to the generous support provided by the Ruth H. Hagenstein Endowed Scholarship, we are able to assist any current UW Seattle undergraduate psychology major with reimbursement for professional conference registration fees and some related expenses.

Award amount: Awards of up to $750 will be given based on overall availability of funds and the number of eligible applicants. Should the overall amount requested exceed our resources, preference will be given to students who have been accepted to present at a conference

Eligibility: Application for funding is open to all current UW Seattle psychology majors. Requests for conference travel expenses will be considered and assistance provided as is possible within our budget. Should the overall amount requested exceed our resources, preference will be given to students who have been accepted to present at a conference

Application Cycle: A call for applications will be sent to all current UW Seattle psychology majors in late winter or early spring quarter each year, with award decisions made in mid to late spring quarter.

Honors Scholar Research Award

The Department of Psychology has allocated funding to provide monetary awards to support Psychology Honors Program research projects. The funds must support research efforts and cannot be perceived as direct benefits to the students – meaning that travel to conferences or personal equipment are not allowed.

Award amount: Awards of up to $500 will be given based on overall availability of funds and the number of eligible applicants.

Eligibility: Current members of the UW Seattle Psychology Honors Program.

Application Cycle: A call to faculty and Honors students will go out typically during winter quarter each year with award decisions made during spring quarter. 

How to apply: UW Seattle Psychology Honors Program members submit award requests to the Department Chair’s office. Students’ faculty advisors must be copied on the award submission and must indicate via email that they approve of the proposal and agree to work with the Department’s financial advisors to manage the budget allocated.

 

James Steele Endowed Scholarship

Thanks to the generous support provided by the James Steele Endowed Scholarship fund, the Psychology Department is able to offer financial support to selected students who have a demonstrated interest in the field of clinical psychology.

Award amount: During the inaugural application cycle in 2023, multiple scholarships of up $3,000 were awarded. This can vary from year to year based on the endowment fund balance. These awards can be used to cover any education related expense.

Eligibility: Current UW Seattle psychology majors who have a demonstrated interest in the field of clinical psychology. Demonstration of this interest will be conveyed via the applicants’ experiences (e.g., volunteer, internship, work, research, personal experience), and their career and/or educational goals.

Application Cycle: A call for applications will be sent to all current UW Seattle psychology majors in early to mid-winter quarter each year with award decisions made by the end of that same quarter.
