Bachelor of Arts

Psychology courses

      • Psych 101 (Introductory) - 5 credits
      • Psych 202 (Biopsychology)- 5 credits
      • Psych 209 (Fundamentals of Research) - 5 credits
      • Psych 315 or both 317 and 318 (Statistics) - 5 or 10 credits
      • Three Core Courses (One from List A, One from List B, One from A or B)- 15 credits
        • A. Psych 300, (Animal Behavior), 302 (Neuroscience of the Mind), 333 (Sensory/Percept.), or 355 (Cognitive)
        • B. Psych 303 (Personality), 305 (Abnormal), 306 (Developmental), 345 (Social), or 357 (Psychobiology of Women)
        • One additional core course from either of the above groups
      • Three additional upper division classes (excludes Psych 496-499)
        • One at a 300 or 400-level - 3-5 credits
        • Two at a 400-level - 3-5 credits
      • 3 credits of Psych 494, 496, 497, 498, 499 or a UW study abroad experience as approved by the Psychology Advising Office.
      • 200/300/400 level psychology electives if needed to reach 53 total credits of psychology* (Exact number of electives depends on the courses selected from above categories; with a maximum of 6 credits from 496-499*) - 0 to 4 credits
      • Students may not use PSYCH 200 as an elective if PSYCH 300 is used to fulfill major requirements; nor may they use PSYCH 203 as an elective if PSYCH 303 is used to fulfill major requirements; nor may they use PSYCH 206 as an elective if PSYCH 306 is used to fulfill major requirements; nor may they use PSYCH 245 as an elective if PSYCH 345 is used to fulfill major requirements.

      • Biology 118, 180, 200, or 220, minimum 2.0 grade - 5 credits
      • One Anthropology or Sociology class, minimum 2.0 grade - 3-5 credits

*Only 6 credits of 496-499 count towards the psychology B.A. major. Up to 18 credits count towards the 180 credits required for graduation.

Other Requirements

      1. Admission to the Department of Psychology
      2. A minimum grade of 2.0 in each psychology and related fields course used to satisfy a requirement for the major.
      3. A 2.5 GPA in all psychology courses taken (UW and transfer), excluding 496-499.
      4. A 2.0 UW GPA is required for the Bachelor of Arts.
      5. Transfer students must meet all of the above requirements including at least 15 graded credits at the 300 and 400 level in psychology at the University of Washington.
      • Courses taken to satisfy requirements for the major (including related fields) may NOT be taken on a Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory basis.
      • Students must also complete all degree requirements of the University and all general education requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.
      • A student may earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in psychology, but not both.
