Coverage of Research and Awards

An article written by Chantel Prat (Cognition and Perception Area), Tara Madhyastha, Malayka Mottarella (Cognition and Perception Area with Chantel Prat) and Chu-Hsuan Kuo (Cognition and Perception Area with Chantel Prat), has become the third most downloaded neuroscience paper published by Scientific Reports in 2020. The paper is called Relating Natural Language Aptitude to Individual Differences in Learning Programming Languages.

Congratulations to Rosemary Meza (Child Clinical Area with Shannon Dorsey) on receiving UW's Arts and Sciences Natural Sciences Graduate Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a graduating doctoral student in the natural sciences. Rosemary’s research is focused on improving mental health outcomes for children and adolescents through dissemination and implementation science in domestic and international settings. Rosemary completed her clinical internship at the UW/Seattle Children’s Hospital, graduated with her Ph.D. in clinical psychology in the summer of 2021, and is presently at Kaiser in a faculty-level research position. 

Malayka Mottarella (Cognition and Perception Area with Chantel Prat), Briana Yamasaki (Ph.D. alum 2018), and Chantel Prat (Cognition and Perception Area) published an article with Discourse Processes. The article is titled: Relating Individual Differences in Reading Skill to Neural Indices of Proactive Control and Online Filtering During a Working Memory Task.

Loranzie Rogers and his adviser, Joseph Sisneros (Animal Behavior Area) were selected by The Howard Hughes Medical Institute for the 2021 class of Gilliam adviser-student pairs. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute selected the 2021 class of Gilliam adviser-student pairs as part of a program to advance diversity and inclusion in science. Neil Gleason (Adult Clinical Area with William George) received a three-year, $138,108 NRSA Training award from the NIH National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. The award is for his work, titled "A Mixed-Methods Examination of HIV Risk in Men Who Have Sex with Men: Effects of Alcohol and Sexual Compulsivity." This project will investigate the effects of alcohol use and sexual compulsivity, both individually and synergistically, on HIV risk behavior. Katherine Manbeck (Adult Clinical Area with Jonathan Kanter) received a 17-month, $20,941, R36 dissertation research award from the NIH Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, starting September 30, 2021. The award is for her work, titled "Increasing health care equity by examining a possible mediator of the relationship between implicit bias and provider behavior: intergroup anxiety."

Liying Wang (Adult Clinical Area with Jane Simoni) was recently awarded a 2021 American Psychological Association (APA) Dissertation Research Award, a $1,000 award to assist her to complete her dissertation. Congratulations!
