Undergraduate Recognition

In fall quarter, Alexis Castaneto was named the 2022-2023 Aric Chandler Scholar. Lexie transferred to UW from Seattle Central College in the fall of 2020. She is set to graduate with a BA in psychology. In memory of Aric Joseph Chandler, his parents, family, and friends established an endowed scholarship fund to support University of Washington-Seattle undergraduate psychology majors who transferred to UW from a Washington community college. This generous gift was made to advance Aric's passion, vision, and dedication to helping others, especially young people.

Congratulations to the 19 students who make up this year’s graduating Psychology Honors Program cohort. Each student has spent two years engaged in faculty-led research and carrying an independent research project under the direction of their faculty advisor. Dr. Chantel Prat has directed this program. This year’s graduating Honors Students are: Hana Basu, Ariana Chavannes, Felice Chen, Kaleigh Cournoyer, Chloe Jaques, Megan Kelley, Cassandra Kim, Bridget Leonard, Xiyan Li, Lexie Liu, Sirui Liu, Sharise Love, Tianqu Lu, Emma Mirhashemi, Jared Naik, Sofia Redondo, Trang Tran, Angela Tseng, and Alice Xing.

The Psychology Department's nominee for the Dean’s Medal in the Natural Sciences Division of the College of Arts and Sciences is Alice Xing. Alice graduates Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in psychology and B.A. in philosophy. She is a member of the psychology honors program, working under the direction of Dr. Yuichi Shoda. This year, three psychology majors were named Mary Gates Research Scholars. Felice Chen, a senior psychology honors student working with Ella Lombard and Sapna Cheryan, received a scholarship for the second time. Felice's work was titled "Perceptions of White Leaders’ Equitability in Diverse Settings". Karin Hellevik, a first-year undergraduate working with Lydia Zhang and Sama Ahmed, received a scholarship for work titled “Behavioral Dynamics of Personal Space in Drosophila".Cassandra Kim, a senior psychology honors student working with Ariel Starr received a scholarship for her research.

In winter quarter, 13 students were named recipients of a Hagenstein Research Travel Award. Made possible by the Ruth H. Hagenstein Endowment, these travel awards assist undergraduate Psychology majors who plan to attend and present at professional conferences. This year's Hagenstein Scholars are: Makayla Bugayong, Harman Gill, Qiwen Gu, Mary Huynh, Amaris Ilar, Evan Kuniyoshi, Yiqing Lao, Yifan Liu, Rosa Peterson, Elora Reilly, Caitlin Rodriguez, Alice Xing, and Dave Young.

Also in winter quarter, nine students were named the inaugural recipients of a James Steele Scholarship. Thanks to the generous support provided by the James Steele Endowed Scholarship fund, the Psychology Department is able to offer financial support to selected students who have a demonstrated interest in the field of clinical psychology. The 2022-2023 James Steele Scholars are: Nelly Aguilar-Santos, Sabrina Flores, Seyla Kim, Mya Leonhard, Jacinto Silva Alvarez, Daniel Thakur, Danielle Topaz, Alondra Torres, and Dave Young.

Darcy Rees, an education and psychology major, was named part of the Husky 100 2023 cohort. Each year, the Husky 100 recognizes 100 UW undergraduate and graduate students who are making the most of their time at the UW.
