Tyler Jimenez published article in Social and Personality Psychology Compass investigating impact of neoliberalism on COVID-19's uneven spread in the U.S.
A new publication from UW Psychology Assistant Professor Tyler Jimenez dives deep into the impact of neoliberalism on COVID-19's uneven spread throughout the US.
Using data from the American National Election Studies and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Tyler Jimenez (with collaborators Harrison Schmitt, Skidmore College and Isaac F. Young, Beloit College) found that states with more neoliberal policies and outcomes (e.g., low spending on social services; high income inequality) experienced higher mortality rates.
Additionally, people who endorsed neoliberal ideology were more likely to oppose federal responses, hold anti-vaccine attitudes, and believe in COVID-19 conspiracy theories. These findings suggest that neoliberalism may have worsened the pandemic.
