In Memoriam: Mia Hamant

Photo of Mia HamantMia Hamant, a University of Washington athlete and undergraduate psychology major, passed away from kidney cancer on Nov. 6, 2025, at the age of 21.

Hamant, who was from Corte Madera, Calif., was a dedicated student-athlete who served as goalkeeper and captain of the UW Women's Soccer team.

Psychology Chair Joseph Sisneros said in a letter to the department after her passing that "her loss is felt profoundly throughout our department and across the university community. During her time in our department, Mia was known for her positivity, determination, and kindness. She contributed meaningfully to the intellectual and social fabric of our program, and those who knew her, whether in the classroom, on campus, or through athletics, remember her as a warm, generous, and dedicated member of our community. ... Our thoughts are with Mia’s family, friends, teammates, and all who were close to her."

We recognize that Mia's passing continues to be difficult. Students may contact the UW Counseling Center for support, and employees may access the Employee Assistance Program.
