Launching into the Next Decade of Innovation

Dear Friends,

2022 has truly been a momentous year for Psychology! As I reflect back on the year, I am in awe of the accomplishments of our students, faculty and staff, who continue to raise the bar on excellence.

In 2022, we graduated the largest class of undergraduates in our Department's history --554 students in total! In addition, 16 graduate students received their PhDs. We have proudly watched this generation of students become integrated in different parts of our society, including assuming leadership positions. Also, in 2022, we welcomed four new and exceptional faculty members to our ranks and we hope to be adding two more new faculty members in the upcoming year. In support of the teaching, research and community missions of our department, in 2022 we also added three essential and highly skilled staff members.Together, as a community, we will work to make 2023 full of new meaningful learning experiences for our students, and full of new research discoveries that continue to improve the behavioral health of society at large.

As we launch into the next decade of innovation, we invite you to partner with us and push the boundaries of psychology. Our greatest needs as a Department currently are supporting the research and education of  our graduate students, and providing novel types of experiential learning opportunities for our undergraduate students. In addition, there is a departmental need for programmatic support of our cross-disciplinary research initiatives: to optimize human potential, to better understand how our brains impact our minds, and to promote social equity.  While  generous support from our community has launched these research initiatives, further support is needed to propel the impact of our work to the next level.

You can learn more, and contribute, to our graduate fellowships and undergraduate support funds by visiting our Giving Page. There you will also find a link to the Friends of Psychology Fund where you can directly support our three research initiatives. If you have any questions, or would like to discuss other giving opportunities, please reach out to my office at chairpsy@uw.edu or (206) 685-8035.

On behalf of the Department of Psychology, I wish you and yours a restful and joyous holiday season and a wonderful start to the new year.

Sincerely,

Professor Sheri J. Y. Mizumori

Chair, Department of Psychology
