Using Place to Fight for Racial Justice
Dr. Courtney Bonam, Associate Professor of Psychology and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies, UC Santa Cruz
Place is race. In other words, people have used place to strengthen racial boundaries and produce racial hierarchy. Narrowly characterizing race as an essence that individuals possess, and racism as isolated instances of bigotry, obscures this reality. My collaborators and I use public scholarship infused with place-based critical history to expose these mischaracterizations and fight for racial justice. Namely, we teach people about the historical role of place in producing racism in the United States. We also encourage people to explore their personal connections with place and race. These efforts can help people see the socially constructed nature of race, acknowledge the systemic nature of racism, become motivated to engage in antiracist social action, and heal from racial trauma. I will share stories of our efforts and lessons for advancing a more critical version of social psychology.
