- Description
- The grade is not the point: Grading without points to recenter learning
Lauren Graham, PhD., Associate Teaching Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Washington
In this talk, I will describe variants of alternative grading that I have used with the aim to evaluate student learning accurately while minimizing influences of structural and implicit biases. I will share details of my use of specifications grading, standards-based grading, and ungrading across multiple undergraduate courses, with a focus on both the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of alternative grading. I'll describe examples of grade-related strategies I've used to increase student engagement and to decrease their reliance on generative ‘AI’ tools.
This free lecture is part of the promotion review for Dr. Graham in the Department of Psychology.
